Mesothelioma - Symptoms
A mesothelioma diagnosis most commonly begins with a complete medical history review and physical examination of a patient who suffers from mesothelioma symptoms. It's not always easy to diagnosis pleural mesothelioma by examining its symptoms. Often, the symptoms of the disease may resemble those of other more common illnesses, including something as simple as the flu, a cold, laryngitis, pneumonia, or whopping cough. Pleural mesothelioma typically takes decades to develop ( 15-40 years) .
Pleural Mesothelioma Symptoms:
- Chest pain
- Coughing
- Wheezing
- Shortness of breath
- Fluid around the lungs (pleural effusion)
- Hoarseness or difficulty speaking
- Blood clots (less common)
Chest pain is usually the first indication of a problem, caused by the growing tumors that enlarge the pleural space and cause it to fill with fluid. The discomfort caused by the above symptoms can also result in loss of appetite and weight loss.
Symptoms of Peritoneal Mesothelioma:
- Abdominal pain, acute to severe
- Swelling of the abdominal region due to fluid accumulation
- Breathing difficulties
- Loss of appetite resulting in weight loss
- Bowel obstruction
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Weakness
- Fever
- Anemia
Common symptoms of pericardial mesothelioma might include:
- Chest pain, ranging from uncomfortable to severe
- Shortness of breath
- Heart palpitations
- Persistent coughing
- Extreme fatigue after minimal activity or exertion
